History

Our Roots: All the way back to 1852

The origins of the Jefferson County Fair date back to the mid-1800s, when the farmers and residents of Jefferson County began gathering to showcase crops, livestock and innovations in agriculture. While precise records vary, local archives indicate fair-type events were held in the 1850s, and an agricultural society for the county formed shortly thereafter.
Over time, what began as modest exhibitions evolved into a full-fledged annual fair: a place for families, youth programs, 4-H members, and craftspeople to display their work, mingle with neighbors, celebrate local heritage and affirm the county’s identity.

A Growing Tradition

Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Fair gradually entered the fabric of community life. Livestock competitions, open-class exhibits, horse and buggy shows, and large gatherings became part of the regular event calendar. As the region grew, so did the Fair’s role: it became not just about agriculture, but about bringing together people of all ages to celebrate and support local accomplishments.

More than a Fair

From the mid 1900s onward, the Jefferson County Fair expanded its scope and appeal. New attractions, grandstand events, and cultural gatherings came alongside the traditional livestock and exhibits. One example: the Gemuetlichkeit Days festival, celebrating the area’s German-heritage roots, moved to the Fairgrounds in 1975 and became a signature part of the Fair’s calendar.
The Fair also adapted to changing community needs: incorporating youth education through 4-H and FFA, adding entertainment and grandstand shows, welcoming family events, and creating a venue for regional celebrations beyond pure agriculture.

Changes Throughout the Years

Many locals can think of a time when the Fair looked completely different - and we're grateful to be building on a tradition that is so strong in the community. Stories are often shared of the original track and grandstand that encircled the park. We've all heard stories of the many horse races that took place on the track, as well as the unfortunate loss of the historic grandstand.
The Fair Park continued to grow and make changes, with these happenings pioneered by innovative members seeing that we need a bigger space for the growing swine program, or a massive gathering hall to host community gatherings which we now know as the Activity Center. Changes will continue to come, and the Fair and Fair Park will continue to improve.

Looking Forward

As the Jefferson County Fair continues into its second century and beyond, it remains anchored in traditions of agriculture, youth development, and community celebration—but also embraces modern enhancements and broader community engagement. Whether through livestock exhibits, grandstand shows, performing arts, or county festivals, the Fair reflects both where the county has been and where it’s going.
